West Bengal Moves Closer to Naming New DGP as List Heads to UPSC
West Bengal is set to send about six IPS officers from the 1991 and 1993 batches to UPSC as DGP Siddh Nath Gupta prepares to retire on October 31, 2026.
The selection of West Bengal's next Director General of Police (DGP) is set to enter its next phase. The state government is prepared to forward a list of about six senior IPS officers to the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).
The list reportedly draws from two batches of the Indian Police Service. The 1991 batch is represented by Natarajan Ramesh Babu and Anuj Sharma. Four officers of the 1993 batch, Peeyush Pandey, Praveen Kumar, Gyanwant Singh and Ajoy Kumar, are also under consideration.
The exercise comes ahead of the retirement of incumbent DGP Siddh Nath Gupta, a 1992-batch West Bengal cadre IPS officer. He is due to retire on October 31, 2026.
Under the process laid down by the Supreme Court in the Prakash Singh case, states send a list of eligible officers to the UPSC, which empanels a shorter panel. The state then appoints one of the empanelled officers.
The state has a month before Gupta's retirement date of October 31, 2026.
