Naval Academy's Former Commandant, Vice Admiral Manish Chadha, Now Heads Naval Operations

Vice Admiral Manish Chadha, AVSM, VSM, has assumed charge as Director General Naval Operations, succeeding Vice Admiral A.N. Pramod. He is an alumnus of the 78th course at the National Defence Academy, commissioned in 1991.

The Director General Naval Operations oversees the planning and coordination of the Indian Navy's operational deployments, working closely with the Naval Headquarters and the three operational commands to translate strategic direction into fleet-level operational planning, a post that sits close to the centre of the Navy's day-to-day operational decision-making, including the scheduling of major fleet exercises and the coordination of anti-submarine, surface, and air operations across theatres.

Chadha's career since his 1991 commissioning has included a posting as Commandant of the Indian Naval Academy, the institution responsible for training the Navy's officer cadre, a role that placed him at the helm of the service's principal training establishment before this move into an operational planning charge, a transition that required him to shift from an institution-building mandate to one centred on live operational readiness across the fleet.

His transition from a training command to the DGNO's office marks a shift from institutional leadership to direct operational responsibility, a common career arc for senior naval officers moving toward Headquarters-level appointments, where a background in officer training is often seen as complementary to the personnel-planning dimension of operational command.
